Wanna Watch Democrat Doug Owens Bake a Pie?

Yeah, me neither. But, here it is anyway.

For some reason, Owens’ campaign uploaded a 6-minute video of the 4th District candidate baking a pie with his daughter and niece. It’s billed as the “first episode” of the series “Desserts with Doug,” with the promise (threat?) that there will be more.

Unfortunately all Owens does is make a pie while wearing a campaign button. There’s nothing in this video about politics or his campaign.

I’m sure someone thought this was a good way to “humanize” Owens, and play off the fact that he was a stay at home dad while his wife finished her medical residency. While it does that, it also could derail Owens’ efforts to portray himself as guardian of the middle class. I mean, how many Utah families can boast a doctor and lawyer raising four kids.

Wait…that sounds awfully familiar!

Holy crap! Doug Owens’ family is basically a Utah version of the Huxtable family!

Claire was a lawyer and Cliff was a doctor. They had five kids – 4 daughters and a son.

The Owens’ have a doctor mother and a lawyer father. There are 4 kids – 3 sons and a daughter.

Not exactly a one-to-one comparison, but we really didn’t see Sondra much until she got serious with Elvin Thibideaux, dropped out of law¬†school and opened that stupid sporting goods store or whatever the hell it was. I digress.

Back to the video…

Owens is making a “Guys’ Apple Pie,” meaning it’s easy for the menfolk to whip up in the kitchen. The concept is a little bit insulting if you think about it, which you probably shouldn’t, because there’s a Congressional candidate baking a pie.

There’s so much going on in this video…

You get the impression Owens doesn’t want to be doing this sort of thing. It’s a fairly painful experience to sit through the whole video at once.

Despite the attempt to humanize Owens, the video comes off as weird. If you didn’t know he was a political candidate, you could be forgiven for thinking this was a run-of-the-mill Food Network audition tape. There’s nothing about politics or the campaign, just a guy and two girls making a pie in a paper sack (from Whole Foods, I’d like to point out).

I give him points for trying to be clever, but the whole video is a major missed opportunity. I understand he’s trying to do something different. But, it’s not enough to just be different. How many different candidates went on to win their Congressional races?

Maybe if he takes another whack at this thing, he can come up with something memorable. Right now, it just plays like one of those insufferable cooking segments you see on a local TV news program.

I’ve reached out to the Owens’ campaign for a comment on the thinking behind the video, and will update this post when I get a chance.
