The Times Are A-Changing!

Major League Soccer

Then there’s this…At least 5 Major League Soccer teams are drawing more fans than Major League Baseball teams.

The Street says Sporting Kansas City, Portland Timbers, Montreal Impact, LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders all have a higher average attendance than a number of MLB teams. In fact, Seattle outdraws EVERY MLB team save three.

Yes, it’s not an apples to apples comparison. MLB has 81 home games a year while MLS is but a fraction of that. But many of those teams play in stadiums that seat fewer than the average baseball venue.

Real Salt Lake GM Garth Lagerwey told me that RSL is on track to basically sell out every game this season – the first time that’s happened.

Pro baseball is #2 in attendance behind the NFL, while MLS is #3. The publicity from the World Cup will only help MLS, which is already on the rise because their fan base is growing.

It won’t be long before soccer supplants baseball as America’s #2 sport.
